Geography
Kalliasseri Grama Panchayat, located in Kannur District, is a region blessed with diverse natural features. The Panchayat has an approximate area of 15.37 square kilometres. In terms of physiography, around 40% of the area consists of midland regions and 60% comprises coastal plain areas.
The Mattul River forms part of the western side of the Panchayat. Several streams and small waterways flow through different parts of the Panchayat. The Kandanchira Thodu, flowing from east to west, plays an important role in the drainage and water system of the region. Another stream originating from the Kunchikkulam area joins the Kandanchira Thodu near Parakkadavu and subsequently becomes known as the Irinavu River near Irinavu.
The landscape of Kalliasseri is characterised by paddy fields, low-lying areas, wetlands, coconut groves and small hillocks. The eastern parts of the Panchayat include relatively elevated areas, while the western parts consist mainly of coastal plains. Kalapram Motta, located near the northern boundary of the Panchayat, is one of the notable elevated areas. From this location, the paddy fields of Kolath Vayal and the surrounding coconut groves can be viewed.
Paddy fields and coconut groves occupy an important place in the agricultural landscape of Kalliasseri. In earlier times, Kolath Vayal was predominantly used for paddy cultivation, while a considerable portion of the area has subsequently been converted into coconut groves. The wetlands and water bodies of the region are also significant from the perspective of biodiversity conservation. Mavuvadi Vayal is notable as a habitat where various species of birds, including migratory birds, can be observed.
The unique combination of landforms, water resources and agricultural areas constitutes an important natural characteristic of Kalliasseri Grama Panchayat. Conservation of natural resources, protection of wetlands, maintenance of water bodies and sustainable land use are therefore important aspects of environmental conservation in the Panchayat.
